About Us

Loft Storage Stilts Ltd was founded in 2010 to bring to market ‘Loft Storage Stilts’ – an invention that we hope will encourage many more homeowners in the UK to fully insulate their lofts to government standards or 270-300mm (10-11 inches).  If every home in the UK had their loft insulation topped-up to this level we would be saving nearly £500 million on wasted energy every year.

The product was invented by loft insulation professional and director of Loft Storage Stilts Ltd, David Ferguson, who thought there must be a better way to retain storage in a loft than having to buy timber and raise the joists manually.  David found that customers often turned down discounted, even free, loft insulation as they could not afford to lose any storage space in the loft and thought the DIY job of raising the joist too difficult a task.

While 270mm (10 inch) thick insulation will reduce energy bills dramatically as well as the carbon footprint each home leaves on the Earth it is understandable that storage space in a home is also vital for many.  There should not need to be a trade-off between the two and now it is easy to benefit from both full insulation and maximum storage.

Loft Storage Stilts

As building regulations and government standards for insulation have changed the depth required in a loft for maximum energy saving has increased dramatically.

In the past loft insulation would only be installed up to the joist level (about 100mm) so it would be easy to board out the loft as boarding could be screwed directly into the joists.

Since 2002 the required depth of loft insulation has been around 270mm.  It is clear to see in the image that this brings the top layer of insulation well above the joists – making it impossible to simply board over the insulation.

Until now this created a huge issue for home owners as they would have to choose between full loft insulation and energy saving or keeping their loft usable for storage.

Our new innovative product, Loft Storage Stilts, have been design specifically to make creating a raised boarded area inside a loft a quick, simple and hassle-free process that anybody can do.

Even those with no DIY skills or very little time can now easily elevate the boarded section so that their loft can be used for storage while still having 270mm of loft insulation.

Loft Storage Stilts are made entirely from recycled polypropelene plastic and can hold a weight of over 5ookgs each – much more than your loft can support.

Loft Storage Stilts will prevent the top layer of insulation from being compressed when you choose to board your loft area.

Until now homeowners would have to buy timber and install a new set of joists in the loft.

This is extremely time consuming as requires sawing the wood to the correct lengths and doubling up two 4 inch pieces of timber to raise the joists to the correct height.

Regardless of how good your DIY skills are this process is expensive.  Much more expensive than using Loft Storage Stilts.

What a sensible idea! We are currently facing the problem of insulating a loft that is full of memorabilia.... ;) These stilts seem to be the answer! — Dianne, Birmingham

Brilliant idea! I didn't have any storage space in my loft as it was fully insulated but I have just used these stilts and can now use my loft for storage. Thank you!! — Sean, Crawley

I'm so happy this product is now available. I have wanted to get my loft properly insulated for years but did not want to lose the storage space or deal with installing new timber joists. Now I can - thanks! — Sarah, High Wycombe

Loft Storage Stilts are strong!! They can hold over 500kgs each. In fact, structural engineers recommend that you should never store more than 50kgs per meter square in your loft as the joists could buckle. Take care not to overfill your loft!!
Check out the Frequently Asked Questions page for more information on how to best install Loft Stilts. Using larger boards is the most important way of getting the best value for money and creating a larger area using fewer stilts. There are loads more great tips too so be sure to take a look.
